Business English

By the end of a number of lessons students will be able to:
  • Communicate in English in different work environments
  • Understand and use a variety of business-related vocabulary
  • Engage in meetings and conferences
  • Deliver presentations and make and follow telephone calls

Sample lesson topics

Meetings
  • Chairing meetings and setting agendas
  • Using business phrases to participate in discussions
  • Learning to agree, disagree, give and ask for an opinion, interrupting, acknowledging somebody else’s argument and redirecting a discussion
  • Engaging in controversial debates. Examples include: “Casual dress codes are beneficial for the company”, “Social media sites should be blocked at work.”
Presentations
  • Giving presentations on a range of different business topics. Examples include talking about your job, company and ambitions
  • Using specific expressions to start, summarise and end presentations
  • Linking and sequencing ideas so that the presentation follows smoothly
  • Responding to questions
Telephoning
  • Listening to telephone conversations to develop an understanding of different accents and intonation
  • Checking and clarifying information by asking questions
  • Answering questions about the telephone conversations to develop listening skills
Job Interviews
  • Preparing for a job interview. Examples include: researching the company, producing answers to typical interview questions etc.
  • Responding to questions and explaining information in more detail by giving examples
  • Asking the interviewer specific questions about the organisation
Business Correspondence
  • Writing formal emails, letters and short messages and memos using business vocabulary
  • Scanning reports and preparing them by reporting ideas and information
  • I will provide opportunities for students to practice and develop their Business English skills through listening and watching YouTube clips and audio recordings of meeting, presentations and job interviews.
  • Learners will develop their vocabulary by reading different texts such as newspaper articles, and magazine extracts on business related topics.
  • They will also participate in language games such as taboo and roleplays to consolidate their learning.
